The ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force has recently released an updated statement regarding the significance of the airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease, in indoor settings.

The updated statement, which replaces ASHRAE’s original statement made in April 2020 that said airborne transmission was “sufficiently likely”, now suggests that “Airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is significant and should be controlled. Changes to building operations, including the operation of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems, can reduce airborne exposures.”

“This announcement from ASHRAE comes at a time when new national standards and benchmarks are desperately needed to both understand and control the airborne  transmission  of SARS-CoV-2 from people-to-people indoors,” said EcoGroup USA’s Chief Technology Officer Harold G. Haines, MS, Ph.D.

“As businesses, schools, and all facilities continue to reopen for everyday use, the necessity of creating a safe indoor environment is crucial to maintaining healthy workplaces for all human activities,” Haines added. “A key factor in developing overall solutions for preventing the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, or any other airborne pathogen, is by utilizing improved existing disinfection technologies, such as ultraviolet light inactivation and highly efficient filters, which are installed directly into air conditioning systems and ducts to  reduce the levels of airborne infectious organisms to safe levels.

Using these improved technologies, along with monitoring systems that allow smart’ sensors to determine effectiveness, the recommendations of ASHRAE and mandates from public health authorities and governmental agencies can be more effectively designed and implemented to help prevent and control the current Covid-19 pandemic.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Diseases Control (CDC), which also agreed with ASHRAE’s original statement, have since acknowledged the risk of airborne transmission in buildings.

While the Environmental Protection Agency recommends that commercial buildings look to ASHRAE for guidance on commercial IAQ standards, professionals should interpret ASHRAE’s guidelines for specific building applications and circumstances due to the complexity and diversity of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

ASHRAE, an industry leader in research, standards writing, publishing, certification, and continuing education, is a global professional society committed to serving humanity by advancing the arts and sciences of HVAC, refrigeration, and other related fields.
